Business Process Modelling (BPM) is a modern term and methodology that has evolved through names and distinct periods, starting ‘division of labour’ of the late 1700s, when production first transferred into factories from cottage industry. More explanation is in the historical growth below.
Broadly the term ‘business’ in Business Process Model/Modelling/modeling is interchangeable with ‘organisation’. Business Process Modelling is not just performed in companies that are conventional; the methodology is increasingly appropriate to all kinds of other organisations, for example government agencies and departments, cooperatives, mutuals and charities, etc.
‘Business Process Management’ is a good example of a related and distinct meaning.
